About The Artist

Surrey artist, Maggie Read was trained at the University of the Creative Arts, formerly Epsom College of Art and Design, where she studied Graphic Design and Illustration. She worked as a freelance illustrator for several years before having a family and re-launching her career as a Tutor and Demonstrator. Maggie continues to paint and exhibit alongside her busy teaching schedule.

Maggie self-portraitExperienced in teaching most media, Maggie's strengths are in drawing; watercolours; pastels and pen & wash. More recently Maggie has been working in acrylics and inks for her own paintings. She is skilled in showing students how to achieve interesting composition and prepare sketches for paintings. Demonstrations and workshops are clearly structured, and colour-mixing is kept simple.

Maggie demonstrates to art groups and societies, as well as in her workshops and classes. Figures and portraits, landscapes, seascapes and still-life are among the many subjects which she demonstrates. For a full range of subjects and media offered, please look under  Demonstrations

In July, Maggie was one of around 50 artists who took part in the Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year competition at Inverary, on Loch Fyne. Although this great opportunity was not one to be missed and was enjoyed by all the artists - Maggie says : "After a week of glorious weather, the day we painted was wet and misty - there was almost an entire white-out over the Loch and continuous rain made painting a real challenge!" Fortunately she had been in the area for a few days already and had made sketches and taken photos of the beautiful scenery : "I decided to paint what I had seen of the reflections in the Loch and the wonderful colours of the mountains, which I had been seeing for the previous few days!" The relevant Sky Arts episode was screened on Tuesday October 30th and repeated on Wednesday 31st (see photos of the day below)!

Maggie's painting entitled "Loch Fyne in Mist" (right) was sold at the Village Artists  Exhibition held at Denbies Wine Estate, Dorking just before Christmas.

Dates of Maggie's next Cornwall holiday at Bodrugan Barton - 19th to 26th July, 2019 - this course is now full.

Maggie is exhibiting with the Guildford Art Society in their Spring Exhibition at Guildford Cricket Pavilion, Woodbridge Road, Guildford, GU1 4RP from 23rd to 31st March, 2019.

Maggie exhibited at Denbies Wine Estate Gallery as part of the Village Artists during December 2018.

Additionally, Maggie exhibited at Pirbright Art Club's Annual Exhibition held at Lord Pirbright's Hall, also during December. Maggie was the founder of the Club, which currently has around 100 members, many of whom exhibited original paintings at this exhibition.

Also in December, Maggie exhibited at the QuExhibition event held at Quex Park, Birchington in Kent. The paintings on display were all done "en plein air" at art-in-the-park days held at Quex House (home of the Powell-Cotton Museum). These days take place throughout the Summer on the first Saturday of each month. Further details can be found on the Quex website.

New Haw Lock - Early Stages New Haw Lock - Nearing Completion August 2018 - Painting at New Haw Lock - As one of a series of outdoor painting days, Maggie took a group of artists from her Friday Class and Pirbright Art Club to this picturesque spot for a day of plein-air painting (and lunch at the pub!) - "We have been studying reflections during the Summer term, and this was the perfect way to put into practice what was learned in class." Two more outdoor Painting Days took place in August - at Brookwood Cemetery and Pyrford Lock.

Railings Exhibition 2018 Saturday July 28th - Pirbright Art Club's annual outdoor "Railings" exhibition - a stunning display of members' work was on show outside Lord Pirbright's Hall, this year, attracting many visitors. Maggie, as the organiser, was pleased with the effort made by so many members and wishes to thank all who took part and helped with the set-up.
